After using Reiki for 14 years, it has evolved into such a deeper practice than I ever imagined it could. Now when I contemplate space, or hear a wise teacher speaking of spaciousness, I just see Reiki. Space has so many meanings - the ultimate idea of the ‘out there’ - the mysterious blanket of stars above us, or space meaning room to breathe. The space between things. The space we find that is present in every atom of the Universe and therefore, every atom of ourselves. Reiki is the energy of that pure space. It is the essence of what is called 'Ku,' the Zen notion of emptiness. Ku is nirvana. In the West, we hear something like ‘empty’ and give it a negative connotation, but in reality it is that pure state we can hope to reach with meditation, yoga, mindfulness, or other spiritual practices such as reiki. Reiki literally translates from Japanese as ‘spiritual energy’ and spiritual energy is all of the cosmic energy of the formless.
We see the Great Spirit as separate from ourselves so language points us in this direction even further, yet Spirit is All That Is – the quantum field of endless formlessness and the manifested form reading these words. This is another trapping in the manifested world of duality, we see form and formless, yet in the ultimate realm where our souls dwell we find that everything has energy and all of that is spiritual energy. That energy is what we call Reiki. Clients often describe it as a warm blanket because it is the blanket of immeasurable space unto which we all exist. It is the Pure Land. The blanket of warm energy that infuses the whole Universe. It is the energy of Oneness.
Reiki is so much more than a healing modality - it a practice of tapping into the interconnectedness of all things. A feeling of blending with the infinite dwelling place of Source. To experience ourselves as one with that energy and to feel as one with another person simultaneously, transmutes this enchantment into their consciousness at the cellular level. This feeling sparks the healing, the change, the alignment with their inner Ku. We heal by activating our soul’s memory of its own vast expanse - our limitless nature. This is our wholeness, our fulfilment with the Buddha-mind, the soul, the emptiness. That is our peace.
Reiki is so much more than hands-on healing, as I described it for so many years at the start of my relationship with it. How very profound it truly is – it seems a simple laying on of hands but that is a small picture of the eternal place we touch. It begins with connection and goes as deep as our awareness will allow. How beautiful that we don’t need to even know what it is or what it’s doing – we just need to permit it to do it’s good work. It reveals to us that we can trust The Universe and tap into our eternal connection to it at any time.
